Hassan Golshannejad, a 36-year-old resident of Mashhad arrested in connection with the January 2026 protests, has been sentenced to death by the city's Revolutionary Court. The initial verdict was formally communicated to him at Mashhad Central Prison (Vakilabad Prison) on October 26, 2026.
According to information received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Iranian security forces arrested Golshannejad in February 2026 while he was visiting a friend's café and transferred him to Vakilabad Prison.
After approximately eight months in pretrial detention, he was tried by a branch of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court on October 20, 2026, and sentenced to death on charges including “waging war against God,” “assembly and collusion,” “insulting the Supreme Leader,” “participation in protests,” “collaboration with a hostile government (Israel),” and “damage to public property.”
Sources told Hengaw that Golshannejad was denied access to a lawyer of his choosing during the first three months of his detention. He was also subjected to severe physical torture during interrogation to extract forced confessions, including beatings by security personnel that left him with a broken rib.
